Dinosaurs...GRrrrr!

Shreeman has been teaching all of us about dinosaurs since he was 2 so I had ample time to think up a special cake for him.... At first I wanted to do the characters from Land Before Time as it is his all time favourite DVD but I decided today that I wanted him to be part of the cake. And believe me he can recreate the growl of a T-rex to the tee so this is him imitating it *heehee*

Since this is my first dinosaur (minus Barney!) it took me 1 hour to complete this T-rex.

The most time consuming part were his teeth.....rolled each and everyone of it individually, then the mucous membranes and the tongue. Bear in mind my amazing helpers are no more so I am all alone here in Singapore *boohoo*

Brontosaurus was next. He was easier.

Fondant Shreeman was even easier and I must say he actually looks like the birthday boy!

Dino footprints on the side...

Pteradactyl..... don't be afraid to use colouring like paint with a brush to give this 3D effect on the dinosaurs.

The good thing about dinosaurs is you can never go wrong...do whatever you like, mould them, shape them just the way you like them and no one can correct you. :)

Life!

A lot of thought, love & effort was put into the planning of this 40th birthday party.

Starting with the invitation which showcased a scrapbook of the life of this talented, bubbly and beautiful lady. The party was filled with live music, dance and most importantly lots of love...a truly fabulous event.

So this is my translation of the beautiful card onto cake..... including a replica of her green stethescope and other significant objects.

Not only is she a doctor but she croons like a jazz great.... She sits on a white clutch with a gold clasp wearing her emerald green birthday outfit following the green theme... this is the colour of 2009 and the colour of MONEY! I added little details like the pink flowers which appeared on the card to enhance the cake.

Shimmering saree, pearls & green gems.... only the best for Rekha!
The intricacy of the saree with the dotted paisley design and pink fringe was amplified with sprinkling of yellow gold dust which is best seen in real life.
Shopaholics paradise...The Great Singapore sale here we come! A flyer showing little details for her to remember where she purchased her birthday dress and to show off her love of shoes and handbags :)

The invite.

Dreams

Chris is a bubbly and fun loving designer who dreams of a beautiful beach side residence someday.

He also loves to play mahjong... but I knew nuts about it! so I got some good advice from my aunts who are experts.... I was told that that combination of tiles is the "Royal Flush" of mahjong. Hope that gives Chris all the good fortune for his 40th.

Painting the dream house scenery on the 'dream bubble' was a lot of fun.... it reminded me of art class in school ~heehee~

Edible dice and tiles...

Little Angel

A fun, colourful and summery cake for Little Angel Cara' poolside party.

Cara cheekily indicating that's she's just ONE!

Farewell!

Sivam and I will be moving to Singapore real soon so made some mini cakeART for our dearest friends who we will miss a LOT!

50th wedding anniversary

Imagine being married for 50 years.... more than a whole life time for some of us!
Mini cakeART to represent his favourite car, an Austin, golf, her favourite handbag & pearls, their favourite destination and a miniature 2 tier wedding cake which were packed in individual boxes and given as doorgifts to their guests.

An Austin convertible... I had to make 24 of each design, this car 'killed' me as I could not delegate the moulding as they were too intricate so took many, many, MANY hours to complete all the little parts like the grill, bumper and wheels...!

Morocco... Mamafia helped me out with these so not too bad ~TQ~
Golf ball and tee...

Gold clutch and pearls... fun to do! strung fondant pearls with white thread.

~Super Pocoyo~

I'm hooked on Pocoyo now!
I watched it on YouTube in Spanish...didn't understand a word but was amused by these little fellows... I also noticed that the background is always plain and simple (concentrating on the characters) so I smoothed the butter icing in pastel colours and let Pocoyo, Elly and the rest do their 'thang'.

Some food for Elly: a burger, strawberry jam sandwich & strawberry shake.

Pato resting after watering all the daisies while Sleepy Bird gets ready to fly.

Deep Blue Sea

I didn't have to do any research for this birthday cake. You see my family are fish lovers...Pa is into Koi and my eldest brother is into tropical fish. They were both marine fish enthusiast at one point so found some old books and files (from the 80's *yikes*, yes we keep useful material in Mamafia's abode for ages...) of all the different fish species....

A trigger fish, a school of sardines and a butterfly fish picking at the corals for morsels of food.

Enjoying lots of champagne after a good dive... with his scuba gear and an approaching turtle....his name neatly scribbled on the sand.
Also added a frangipani as they are celebrating this milestone at the Pangkor Laut Resort where those beautiful dainty flowers are aplenty.

Clown fish galore, anemone, sea horse and another scuba diver creating bubbles to form the no.40.

More fish and coral at the back...there's a surgeon fish in there, somewhere too...

StarWars*+.

When I got an order for another Star Wars cake I immediately decided that it would look like a poster as I had seen so many amazing ones before.... So did my research on all the planes and battleships and chose the Trade Federation Battleship in the background with Luke, Yoda & Chewy in the foreground. The former 2 turned out well I think but Chewy looks really scary! He was hard to do....

Double chocolate cake with ganache center...
I had the picture of this design in my mind with the midnight sky effect but didn't know how to execute it as I haven't been for any formal decorating classes so as usual Mamafia came to the rescue. She went for classes in the 70's and she still remembered... and had lots of handy tips to give me...

Tip: After pumping black butter icing, place patches of blue and cream icing in clumps. Press them down in a smudgy way, then use a spatula to spread it out ~artistically~ to give that marbled effect.

*Let'sSalsa!*

I decided to make something colourful yet classy for a girlfriend of mine who has the biggest heart ever.
She LOVES salsa! So I made her a sexy Latino Mysteryman and added the lyrics from Shakirah's hit "Hips don't lie" as she can shake it like nobody else...
we had a blast babe...thanks!
Tip: To make the frills on the skirt roll a cocktail stick on a thin strip of fondant to create that fluidity
A life size fondant masquerade mask with pink feathers for her :)

H&S

This was my very first cake assembly..... transporting this cake was a feat! The bottom tier was a vanilla buttercake and the rest were dummies all covered in fondant.
The beautiful bride had full reign on the cake, her soon-to-be husband only stressed that whole cake shouldn't pink so I added more lavender and white to fit into the elaborately decorated ballroom...
She requested different designs for each tier and lots &lots of cupcakes.... 400 all together

The idea on paper

Doorgifts...
Hand painted monogram and a butterly on a printed floral base

Placed in beautiful personalised boxes by the bride.

I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat!

When I received this order, from the sweetest person ever ~:) for her adorable one year old.... I never thought I'd be sculpting Tweety's face at 3am! The little bird looks easy on paper but I had to re-do it a few times till I was satisfied.....

Tweety perched on a swing which is hanging off a vine creeping up the no.1

All time favourites... Mr.& Mrs. Mouse

Pluto...
Tip: just paint little white dots to their eyes and they'll twinkle.

These were given to her guests. Two large cupcakes fit nicely in this dragonfly & hearts box

Happy "Bed" Day!

I received an email with a very cute request.... you see her dad LOVES his bed and does almost everything on it! So I made a miniature bedset as per the picture she sent me... including headboard, side table and lamp... with the no.66...

Having a cup of coffee with all his paper work next to his silver briefcase...

...and of course, breakfast in bed.
Roti canai anyone? fish curry or dhal?

Rock on!

I had this idea for a Rocker cake a while back but was inspired but the darker haired one Adam who sang the 'Ring of Fire'. I thought his version was+magnetic-! I was glued to the screen watching him sing that! and I am not even much of a rock fan.... ~haha~ so he must be really good....

Small details like the flames on the number makes each cake unique...

Barbie turns 50!

If only we could all be like Barbie..... she tunrs 50 but looks younger by the day!?!
But then again a few wrinkles doesn't hurt, in fact it adds character to one's full life...

I wanted to do the 'different faces' of Barbie to showcase her beautiful transformation throughout the years but unfortunately the clients were not allowed to consume any products with Barbie (face/figurines) on it... so with the help of the website, decided to do her accessories and logo in cute colours.

The Storyteller

For a beautiful & stylish professional storyteller from Singapore who has more than 500 books in her collection and appreciates the finer things in life .... and of course her mic.

Chanel clutch and black rose....

She can't live without her blackberry and cappucino (+ lipstick smudge) and added other little details like her glasses, shoes and long red nails.

Listening intently.....

These are some of her favourite titles... and shoes, shoes, shoes.....

And the finale... *eh where did that baby come from?*

Kamini has 2 handsome sons but loves little girls so a chubby little baby girl was placed on her arm once the cake was presented to her.... a thoughtful idea by her equally gorgeous sister-in-law....

Work that Body!

For a gym freak who has...*ummmm* assets to die for...
Specifically ordered by a bunch of her girlfriends. That's what friends are for..... to share the laughter, tears & PARTY! .... but most importantly chauffeur the kids around :)

Dumbells, sneakers, gym outfits, jump rope, water bottle on regular cupcakes

Tip: use a silver painted toothpick to secure the weights on the dumbell....

To Jenny with love

Sally made this order all the way from USA....what a loving and thoughtful sister! She had wonderful things to say about Jenny and so incorporated all of her favourite people & things on the little cupcakes like her sons and grand-daughter, designer handbags and shoes, an apron, timber as she runs a logging company and longevity peaches. She is 55 but doesn't look a day over 30! The figurine represents her singing (she loves karaoke) in a glamorous evening gown ...
~that's the beauty of fondant, you can be your own fashion designer extraordinaire~
*my other dream job*
I'm just discovering all these awesome gadgets available for cake decorating... Life has become much easier as well as more fun as I can finally achieve so much more... like intricate details with textures, shapes and contours. For example, the hem of her black gown was made with a lace cutter which cuts the shape and imprints the design of the lace, then I used different nozzle holes to cut and make the lace look even more detailed.

Liverpool FC

I am NO football fan, now more of a cricket fan (!) but I think the Liverpool FC logo is cool...much more difficult than I anticipated especially trying to get the hand painted 'bird' right. I also liked how the fire turned out moulded with fondant for a livelier look.

Ryan's favourites are Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres so added their names on the FC scarf for a finishing touch.

Sophia

Bubbles and a blue eyed rubber duckie

Teddy, rattle, bib, milk bottle, duckie and foot prints...

A sweet gift from baby Sophia to her guests on her Fullmoon.

Magical Garden

I think I might have given Little Miss Fairy a bit too much collagen in ther lips....
What a pout! ~haha~
This cake was a joy to do...whimsical, pastel with flowers, twines and butterflies... with a fairy working her magic while sitting pretty on the no.1

Lily

A contemporary creation....

A more traditional one....each to his own!
I haven't mastered flowers yet..... so bear with me ;)
Although these were birthday cakes but this sort of design can also be used for weddings/engagement.

Dhilshara & Ariel

Little Flounder...
*Oops* forgot his eyebrows...no wonder he looks a bit odd! But Ariel turned out pretty with her bright and flowy hair.

Dhilshara looking in awe! ....abandoning her sandcastle to gaze at the beautiful mermaid.

Cinderella

Dreams really do come true.....

Sparkles, pearls and one missing shoe...

The royal cushion presenting 'the' shoe

Her little helpers looking proudly at her.....
Again muted colours were used due to food allergies.

Dora and Boots

Boots perched on Dora's arm. Needed to put some thought into the structural aspect and then used wires and cocktail sticks to secure him well.

I was asked to use as little food colouring as possible on the cake hence the muted colours and only on the removable fondant.
I really enjoyed making the tree...abstract cakeART :)

Crossword

Yes! another NST reader :), a wonderful grandfather who is a crossword whizz at 80! So I had to do a bit of research on Thesaurus online to come up with descriptions of those words.... ~eeeek~

I used fondant strips to create the crossword grid so it was a bit time consuming, but I was very happy once I was done with it cos it looked very neat.

The party fell on V-day so added an ad in the corner which says Valentine's Offer...RM80++
