Sifu!

Mamafia ( Ma for short ) is a *fantabulous* cook. Not only does she do cakes and local desserts, including seri muka, coconut candy, bubur chacha, pineapple tarts, ubi kayu and coconut sauce, tapioca kuih, pulut hitam, sago& gula melaka, leng chee kang, almond jelly, ...the list can go on&on&on&on, but you should try her savoury dishes like her crab curry, beef rendang, devil's curry, vadavum, birthday mee, har lock, century egg porridge, fish maw soup, black pepper chicken, roti jala & chicken curry, kuey teow theng, gizzard peretal, mee hoon ker, fried meehoon and sotong sambal, chicken rice, braised pork knuckle, siew yoke(the crispy skin is the best)....I'm drooling! We were little Michelin tyre kids way back then as we ate WELL. I remember eating a whole spring chicken even before I turned 10!

I am convinced one of the reasons Ma is such a fabulous cook is because she has super senses! I am not kidding...she can taste and smell even the smallest diferences in any given situation! But definitely because she never gives up and tries and tries until she achieves her goal. A Perfectionist. Just like me when it comes to cake decorating....

So I was wondering where I got my creative skills and was looking through her recipe drawer one day and came across an old photo album of hers....I was blown away by what I saw. If the pictures weren't faded with time, you would have thought you were looking through a catalogue of cakes for sale today! My, were they cool....! So now I know where I got it from! With no professional training in baking or cake decorating, I learnt all I know from my Sifu! She does all of my 'R&D' for cake flavours...and she also taught me basic decorating skills.

But believe it or not, most of my fondant sculpting skills I learnt through YouTube! The internet is an amazing tool! I appreciate other peoples hard work and creativity but i never copy! use it as a kick start for your creative engines to rev up....

And thinking out of the box always helps....

Tic tac teeth and fondant ears! Bite into them...uummm yummy moist coconut cupcakes....

Surprise!

A chocolate gift box. Yup it's totally edible! Open it and...tadaaah! her real present's inside...

Bundle of Joy!

My first ever figurine for a soon-to-be yummy mummy!

Year of the Rat

A basket of real kamquats for good luck! Chinese New year 2008.
Tip: Let your imagination run wild! Even the smallest kitchen has infinite resources for your creations. For example I used cumin seeds to create the eyes of the mice.

Musical Ballerina

A big cake for a talented little 5 year old who plays the piano and loves ballet. That's a replica of her concert tutu.

Fore-ver Birdie

My 2nd cake for Sivam. The flag (cannot be seen) attached to the silver rod said Fore-ver Birdie! Watch out for his 40th birthday cake. Coming soon August 2008....

Tip: Numerical candles usually come in mixed colours and polka dots. If the colours of the candles do not match each other or the cake, just pump butter icing to cover like I did with this one for a quick fix.

Bookworm

For a golf crazy
ophthalmologist.
Think Like Tiger, Fearless Golf, Ophthalmology text book and an ophthalmoscope.

Picnic with Pooh

Loved doing the blanket and the balloon!

It's Not About Luck

Pa & Ma's Casino themed 39th wedding anniversary party. We had a blast! Some lucky ones went home a little bit richer!

Peace & Tranquility

Chinese characters 'Peng An'. And Koi symbolising long life. Managed to find the word 'ink' in the chinese dictionary and added it on the ink bottle!

Ma & Coco

Mickey!

Sorcerer Mickey from Fantasia...pop up features... There was a lot of *drama* doing this cake! But this secret will remain a secret.... only a select few will ever find out... I hope!

Belly Dancer

One of my favourites-belly dancer cake with Moroccan tile effect. We celebrated Pa's birthday at Al Nafourah and the real belly dancer coincidentally wore red too!

Sizzlin' Sixteen

This was a fun one...my first 'human' figurine for a pizza and lollipop loving teen guitarist.

Saree & Spices

This was for my darling aunt who loves greenery, and cooking...so added the 'batu giling' on the side with real spices. And a fondant replica of her favourite saree draped on the cake.

Twin Survival Kit

A survival kit with each twin's picture on it's open lids.
2 of each for the little angels: milk bottles, napkin and safety pins, rattles, hearts...For dad: a mug of strong coffee, story book, camera, baby monitor, wad of cash and a clothes peg to pinch his nose while changing their diapers and finally a diamond ring for his wife to keep her happy...all placed in the shape of the no 43 for his 43rd birthday.

Ferrari Fever

This was the toughest cake to do by far... every detail was made out of cake and fondant. I even had the blueprints of the car in front of me but creating straight lines on the Ferrari was indeed a challenge.

Teddy Love

Hadn't mastered the fondant ribbon yet so a little droopy.
TIP: make sure you dry fondant motives long enough before presenting. In humid countries like ours place in an air-conditioned room to speed up drying process. Do NOT refridgerate as once placed outside, coloured fondant will sweat and drip, making an ugly mess.

Koi!

My very first cake order...for a 60 year old fish enthusiast. Actually a few other 'firsts': using edible glitter, 3D fish and flowers, baking on my own and making marble effect stones. It took me ages to finish it but it's a memorable one...

Hahaha!

Virgin blogger! didnt' realise I was typing in Hindi in my previous post!
